On the right bank of the Dordogne, the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation occupies the same restricted geographical area as Saint-Emilion.
It is distinguished by more limited yields (only 40 L/ha) and a longer minimum aging in oak before marketing – at least 12 months.
On just over 4,000 ha of clay-rich limestone soils, Merlot dominates the grape varieties. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are also found, which helps improve the quality and diversity of the blends used.
This appellation is governed by a classification initiated in 1955.
