James Suckling tasted Couvent des Jacobins vintage 2015 with a rating of 93/100 and the following tasting notes : ‘Blackberry and liquorice aromas with lots of grapey undertones. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a mineral finish. A fresh and intense finish. Needs two or three years to soften’.
Grape Variety: 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot
Wine Tasting Notes: At first, 2015 vintage is a well balanced wine.
From the prestigious Saint-Emilion appellation, this vintage displays a purple-tinted deep and intense red colour. Its nose is complex and marked by violet and black cherry fruit (cherry, elderberry) notes, enhanced by a hint of vibrant freshness of Sichuan pepper, vanilla-flavoured wood and grilled caraway. With aeration, the 2015 vintage reveals a charming aspect with black fruit aromas and a nice balance. Its rich palate offers finely extracted tannins and a good balance on the mid-palate. The fruity aromas from Merlot associated with the freshness of Petit Verdot develop a graceful vanilla-flavoured woody finish.
Food Pairing Recommendations: This wine would be fantastic to enjoy with a Farmhouse cheese platter, a Roasted Beef fillet or some Duck Magret.
First, Couvent des Jacobins was established on top of one of the highestpoints of Saint-Émilion following a land bequest in 1389 to the Dominican friars, whose members were known as « Jacobin Brothers ».
Then, Dominican friars in the region were also offering shelter to Christian pilgrims. They made the Way of Saint-James through France and down to Spain.
For almost four centuries, the friars were also growing vines and making wine. Indeed, they took advantage of a well-exposed vineyard located immediately outside the city moats.
Back in the days, Couvent already exported its wines in particular to the royal courts of England and France. Finally over that period, the wines of Couvent des Jacobins became among the most representative of the Saint-Emilion area.
