At the end of World War II, Léon Chatté, then aged 29, and his wife Suzanne, opened their first charcuterie (pork butcher) near Paris.
In those days, rules were not what they are now, and pigs were delivered alive in the courtyard at the back of shop.
Léon was working long hours, seven days a week, preparing food, developing recipes, while Suzanne was running the shop on her own, from 7am to 8pm daily.
They worked very hard and built a solid reputation for quality. Their reward was to have customers queuing inside and outside the shop.
Léon and Suzanne’s son, Jean-Yves, his wife Marie Christine, and their three young children – Romain, Alexandre, and Caroline – decided to make Hong Kong their new home.
Their idea was to be the first to set up in Hong Kong to promote exclusively French wines. They established their foothold in the city with a successful wine distribution business, in Hong Kong and across Asia.
Seven years on, the couple decided to expand into retail.
The inaugural Monsieur CHATTÉ shop opened in Heng Fa Chuen in 1996, making it the first Gourmet shop dedicated to French culinary experience in the heart of Hong Kong.
From the start, products were sourced directly from French producers.
Wine, at that time a new product for many customers, quickly represented an important part of the business. Customers were eager to discover and learn. It proved to be the beginning of a long love story between wine and Hong Kong.
The next generation started to enthusiastically join the family enterprise, culminating in the inauguration of the Bonham Strand shop (Sheung Wan) in 2008. This milestone event, supported by the presence of the French Consul General, Mr. Kaspi, underlined the shop’s significance in promoting French gastronomy in the region.
The homemade production started with the setup of a state-of-the-art kitchen.
After 12 years in Bonham Stand, the decision was made to move next door, to 91 Jervois Street.
Homemade and fresh food offer could now be developed further, in a better adapted space, while the shop maintained its status as haven for aficionados of French cuisine.
This coincided with the start of a buoyant catering business, with many high-profile companies and organizations trusting Monsieur CHATTÉ for their company’s events.
