Marie-Galante, the hundred mills island, has always been home of the sugar cane. The Distillery is located on a 110 meters high plateau called “Bielle” after the Bielle family whose roots lay in Guadaloupe since the 18th century.
It is at the end of the 19th century that the Bielle distillery was founded. The esate was used as a sugar factory until then. In 1955, Paul Rameaux bought the distillery. It has remained in the same family ever since with his nephew taking over since 1975.
Ever since the distillery is perpetuating its long tradition of producing high quality agricole rum from pure sugar cane juice.
Furthermore the distillery is the only one in the carribean to use phytoremediation for waste treatment. This solar energy driven clean-up technique uses living plants for degradation of the residus left after distillation of the Bielle rums.
