During the Middle Age,  a fief was the property of a lord. This is the case for these very old vines which take their name “Clos du Fief” from this ancient heritage.

The vineyard area is 0.35 ha.

Planting density: 10,000 plants/ha.

Average age of the vines: 105 years.

Type of soil: Sandy-loamy.

Altitude: 300m.

Exposure: South-East.

Viticulture: Goblet size. Vine care with products approved Organic Agriculture..

Vinification: Carbonic vinification without sulfur. Long maceration (15 days) and roasting of the vats. Aging: In 228 liter oak barrels for 12 months. …

Tasting Notes: At first a deep garnet color with purple reflections. Then, the Nose of flowers and spices reveals with its notes of ripe cherries. Last, a nice concentration in the mouth. Overall a long and mineral finish.

Food pairing recommendations:  Julienas Le clos du Fief 2020 Franck Besson will pair deliciously well with a Duck breast with orange, Pierrade, or Fourme d’ Ambert the creamy blue cheese from France.

Ageing Potential : up to 15 years.

About the Julienas Le clos du Fief 2020 wine maker: Franck Besson:

Franck stands out as one of the most exceptional winemakers in the Beaujolais region.

Taking charge of 4 hectares of gamay vines situated at high elevations near Jullié, which he inherited from his father-in-law.

Franck swiftly recognized the remarkable terroir’s quality, even though it fell outside the Cru designation.

Displaying his ingenuity, Franck embarked on a stroke of brilliance by crafting méthode Champenoise blanc de noir using this extraordinary gamay fruit. To our knowledge, there is no other winemaker in the world undertaking such an endeavor! All of Franck’s vines are cultivated organically, and the fruit is meticulously hand-harvested. In the cellar, the sparkling wines undergo a period of aging on lees, ranging from 6 months to 3 years, before disgorgement.

As for the Cru Julienas ‘Clos du Fief’ produced by Franck, it matures for a year in barrels that are 3 years old.
