Jean Yves CHATTÉ passed by an empty shop in Sheung Wan and fell in love with its unique architecture. He immediately figured out how he could turn it into a heaven for French gastronomy. In May 2008, the new Monsieur CHATTÉ French gourmet shop was inaugurated by the, then, French Consul General, Mr. Kaspi.

Many thought the location was weird. Most shops in Bonham Strand were selling dry seafood and Chinese tea. Nearby Jervois street was nicknamed “Snake Street” and Sheung Wan district was regularly flooded.

Fortunately, after only a few days of operation, a Food Editor spotted the shop, popped inside, bought a few items and wrote about a “new gem in Sheung Wan’’.
